The Life of Stuntman Steve

Winning author: Ben
Illustrator: Pete Whitehead

Once there was a guy named Steve. Steve is a stuntman. In a shed he keeps his supplies. He has helmets, harnesses, rope, electric scooters, ladders, bungy cords, slingshots, fireworks, parachutes, and minor explosives. He does a bunch of stunts that sends him to the hospital sometimes. Some of the stunts that he does were diving into shallow pools, long jumps in vehicles, jumping off the Grand Canyon on a sit-and-bounce, and swimming off a waterfall into piranha infested water. Stuntman Steve was in the hospital for the 8th time because he rode a bike off a high dive into a pool with no water. In the emergency room he told himself "If I keep doing stunts one day I could be history." He had been watching the news in a full body cast. They were talking to the directors of N.A.S.A. It had been a year after the first walk on the moon. There was a question in everyone's head at N.A.S.A. "What are we going to do about transportation?" one of the directors said. Once Steve had got out of the hospital he wanted to talk with N.A.S.A. So he went to the directors' office and told them that he had an idea. He said, "Hello I'm Steve. I was a stuntman then I retired. What if we traveled by pogo stick." The directors looked at each other then at Steve. He kept talking. "There isn't a lot of gravity on the moon so you can get farther than just jumping. I'll go into space and test it." "OK." said the directors. It took two years of planning. Finally Steve's shuttle and crew were ready. They set off. It took two days to get to the moon. Once they got there Steve took out his pogo stick and hopped down the ladder. He got on the pogo stick and started bouncing. First he started off small and slow. Then he began to go higher and faster. Soon enough each jump had huge distance. After awhile his crew told him he was going too high. He didn't listen. Soon he did the biggest jump he had ever done. He zipped out into the black and he never came back down. The crew waited for three long hours and he never touched the ground. The finally packed up and went back to Earth. Where ever Stuntman Steve is we might never find him. Even if we do he might tell us about life on other planets or riding in an asteroid belt. Yet we won't believe him and he won't have any proof. And he won't care because in his head he says to himself "I took an adventure through space."
